Princess Elisabeth Island and Belgium's offshore wind plans

How the Princess Elisabeth energy island and the new offshore wind zone will change Belgium's grid, and what it means for onshore developers.

The island

Elia is building an artificial energy island off the Belgian coast to collect power from the Princess Elisabeth wind zone and link to the UK and Denmark.

Onshore impact

The Ventilus and Boucle du Hainaut projects are needed to move this power inland. Their timing affects where new storage and demand can connect.

Note

Years are estimates and parts of the island programme have been delayed. Gridscouter scores are estimates from open map data, not grid operator capacity figures. Confirm connection capacity with the grid operator.
