Best BESS, solar, wind and data center sites in Belgium
Top-ranked Elia substations in Belgium for battery storage, solar, wind and data centers, with suggested sizes, plus permitting basics for Flanders and Wallonia.
Battery storage
Verbrande Brug (380 kV) ranks first at 100/100 with a suggested 300 MW / 600 MWh. The Nemo Link converter station, Eeklo Noord, Drogenbos and Bruegel also max out.
Solar, wind and data centers
For solar, Aubange in the south ranks first (80/100, about 245 MWp). For wind, Van Maerlant near Bruges leads (99/100). For data centers, Lillo in the Antwerp port leads (100/100), near seven existing data centers.
Permitting basics
Elia runs the high-voltage grid; Fluvius (Flanders) and ORES or RESA (Wallonia) run distribution. Flanders uses a single omgevingsvergunning; Wallonia uses a permis unique or permis d'environnement. Many top sites sit in congested areas, so check capacity with Elia early.
Land
Paid plans add land patches with links to the land registry and the Flemish and Walloon map portals. Gridscouter scores are estimates built from open map data, not grid operator capacity figures. Always confirm connection capacity with the grid operator.
