Finland BESS site selection: how to pick substations and land in Fingrid's network
A practical guide to choosing battery storage sites in Finland: Fingrid and DSO connections, substation distance, land, permitting and the questions to ask early.
Why Finland is on every storage developer's list
Finland combines fast-growing wind power with an active reserve and balancing market, which makes it one of the more interesting Nordic markets for batteries. That interest also means good grid locations get claimed quickly.
How to shortlist substations
Start with Fingrid's 110 kV and higher substations near wind clusters, then check the regional distribution operator for smaller connections.
Prefer sites within 1–2 km of the substation to keep cable cost and land agreements simple.
Check whether other storage projects are already planned at the same node — competition for the same connection point is the most common surprise.
Check this on the Finland map
Substations scored for BESS, solar, wind and data centers, plus land positions and instant site checks.
Land and permits
Industrial and agricultural land near substations is often available, but check the local detailed plan (asemakaava) or master plan, Natura 2000 areas, groundwater areas and distance to housing for noise.
Our take
Finland rewards developers who move early and talk to landowners directly. Spend your time on the three best substations, not on twenty mediocre ones.
