Switzerland's grid connection process & queues

How to navigate the connection process with Swissgrid and cantonal distribution operators.

The grid structure

Switzerland's grid is managed by Swissgrid at the transmission level (220/380 kV) and by hundreds of local DSOs at lower voltages. The connection process depends on the voltage level and the specific canton.

Application steps

Developers must submit a connection request to the relevant operator. This starts a technical study to assess the grid's capacity and the necessary reinforcements.

Queue management

Grid capacity is often tight in industrial areas and remote mountain regions. Connections are generally handled on a first-come, first-served basis, though strategic energy projects may receive priority.

Costs and timelines

Connection costs include the physical link and a share of grid reinforcement. Timelines vary but large-scale projects can take several years from request to completion.

Note

Gridscouter scores are estimates from open map data, not grid operator capacity figures. Confirm connection capacity with the grid operator.
