Solar permitting in Switzerland

Permitting paths for rooftop, ground-mounted and Alpine solar projects.

Rooftop solar

In most cantons, rooftop solar only needs a simple notification procedure rather than a full building permit, provided it meets aesthetic guidelines.

Ground-mounted solar

Building solar on agricultural land is strictly regulated. It is generally only allowed if it serves a specific agricultural purpose or if the land is of low value.

The Solar Express

Recent federal legislation has simplified permitting for large Alpine solar projects to speed up the energy transition. These projects still face strict environmental checks.

Cantonal differences

Each canton has its own planning laws. Developers must work closely with local building authorities and heritage protection offices.

Note

This is a general overview, not legal advice. Rules change; check with the local authority and a local adviser before committing.
