Alpine solar
Valais has the highest solar radiation in Switzerland. Large-scale high-altitude solar projects are being developed to capture winter sun above the fog line.
Pumped hydro
The canton is home to major pumped storage plants like Nant de Drance. These act as massive 'water batteries' for the European grid.
Grid challenges
Connecting remote mountain sites requires expensive high-voltage cables. Existing lines often follow narrow valleys and have limited spare capacity.
Land and environment
Projects must balance energy production with landscape protection and tourism. Many sites use existing infrastructure like dams or ski lifts to reduce impact.
