Portugal's grid connection process & queues

Understanding the challenges and procedures for securing grid access in Portugal.

Access Regime

Grid access in Portugal is managed through auctions or a direct application process, depending on the current regulatory framework.

Capacity Auctions

Portugal has successfully used auctions to allocate grid capacity for solar, which has led to record-low tariffs.

Connection Queues

Strong interest in renewables has led to significant queues. The government often introduces new rules to clear 'zombie' projects from the queue.

TSO and DSO Roles

REN manages the transmission grid (RNT), while E-Redes manages the distribution grid (RND). Most large projects connect to REN.

Note

Gridscouter scores are estimates from open map data, not grid operator capacity figures. Confirm connection capacity with the grid operator.
