How to pick a battery site in Croatia: substations, counties and the Šibenik lesson
A practical guide to BESS site selection in Croatia: where the grid is strong, what the first 60 MW project teaches, and which checks to run before leasing land.
Start at the substation
Every Croatian battery project lives or dies by its grid connection. HOPS publishes a ten-year network development plan (2026–2035) that shows planned reinforcements and new 110 kV substations — read it before you lease anything. A substation scheduled for reinforcement is worth more than one that looks strong today but has no investment planned.
What the first project teaches
BESS Šibenik (60 MW) is the template: a site in Dalmatia, close to a strong substation, in a region where summer tourism drives peak demand. The project spent years in development before passing HOPS prequalification for balancing services in May 2026. The lesson: connection studies and prequalification take far longer than construction, so start them on day one.
Check this on the Croatia map
Substations scored for BESS, solar, wind and data centers, plus land positions and instant site checks.
The land checks that kill projects
Croatian coastal counties are saturated with tourism and nature protection — Natura 2000 covers a large share of the country. Before signing anything, check: distance to the substation (every kilometre of cable is real money), zoning in the county spatial plan, flood and fire risk, and whether the plot is in a protected landscape. Inland counties like Slavonia often have weaker grid but far easier land.
What to do with this
Run the land checks before the lease, not after. Gridscouter's Croatia map lets you click any substation, find land positions around it, and run a feasibility check on each plot — zoning, protected areas, flood risk and grid distance in one view. Every Gridscouter plan starts with 14 days of full access for €0 today. Cancel any time before the trial ends and you pay nothing.
Gridscouter scores are estimates from open map data, not grid operator capacity figures. Always confirm connection capacity with the grid operator.
