7 common BESS site selection mistakes (and how to avoid them)
Too far from the substation, too close to homes, ignoring competition: the mistakes that kill battery projects.
1. Picking land before the grid
Land is easy to find; grid capacity is not. Start at the substation.
2. Going too far from the substation
Every extra kilometre of cable adds cost and permitting risk. Aim for within 1–2 km.
Check this on the Netherlands map
Substations scored for BESS, solar, wind and data centers, plus land positions and instant site checks.
3. Ignoring nearby homes
Batteries and inverters make noise. Plots within about 100–150 m of houses usually need a noise study.
4. Missing competing projects
A battery already planned at the same substation can take the capacity you counted on.
5. Forgetting heritage and archaeology
Archaeology zones can add months of studies.
6. Overlooking flood risk and soil
Flood zones and polluted soil add cost or block the project.
7. Doing it all by hand
Every one of these checks is on the Gridscouter map. Every Gridscouter plan starts with 14 days of full access for €0 today. Cancel any time before the trial ends and you pay nothing.
Gridscouter scores are estimates from open map data, not grid operator capacity figures. Always confirm connection capacity with the grid operator.
