Romania connected 663 MW of batteries in 2026 — where the next wave will go

Romania's battery fleet will approach 2 GW by the end of 2026, up from almost nothing. Reserve prices thin as the fleet grows — location and speed decide who still earns.

What happened

Transelectrica connected 663 MW of battery storage between January and 20 August 2026 — more than a quarter of all new capacity added that year. Total Romanian storage stood at 989 MW on 1 August, and the TSO expects roughly another 1,000 MW before year-end, which would put the fleet near 2 GW. The two-hour pattern

The typical new Romanian battery is a two-hour system — the Părău facility that took the country past 2,500 MW of new capacity is 76.76 MW / 150 MWh. That shape matches the price curve: solar crushes midday prices, evening demand lifts them again, and a two-hour battery charges in the first window and sells into the second.

Three revenue lines, one shrinking

Romanian batteries earn from day-ahead and intraday arbitrage, the balancing market, and capacity payments for FCR, aFRR and mFRR reserves. The reserve line pays best to early projects: every new battery bids into the same auctions and pulls clearing prices down. With the fleet doubling within a year, the reserve premium of 2026 will not survive to 2028. Meanwhile ANRE approved a demand-side flexibility service in August 2026, adding competition from consumers who get paid to cut load.

What to do with this

Underwrite your project on arbitrage and balancing, treat reserves as a declining bonus, and pick substations where solar saturation creates the widest midday-evening spread.
