Romania's grid connection process and queues

Understanding technical connection permits (ATR) and how to manage the grid connection queue in Romania.

The ATR process

The Technical Connection Permit (ATR) is the most critical document for any project. It defines the point of connection and the necessary grid reinforcements.

Transmission vs Distribution

Larger projects typically connect to Transelectrica's 220 kV or 400 kV transmission network, while smaller ones connect to the 110 kV distribution grid managed by regional operators.

Capacity queues

Many high-voltage nodes, especially in the south and east, are heavily subscribed. Developers must monitor the official registers of connection requests to assess competition.

Managing timelines

Connecting to the grid can take several years if new substations or lines are required. Securing a spot in the queue early is vital for project viability.

Note

Gridscouter scores are estimates from open map data, not grid operator capacity figures. Confirm connection capacity with the grid operator.
