Sweden BESS site selection: bidding zone, substation and land in one checklist
How to choose a battery storage site in Sweden: why the bidding zone matters, how to shortlist Svenska kraftnät and regional substations, and what to check on the land.
Start with the bidding zone
Sweden is split into four bidding zones (SE1–SE4). Price spreads and flexibility needs differ a lot between them, so the zone you build in shapes the revenue case before you even look at a plot.
Then the substation
Shortlist substations of Svenska kraftnät and the regional network owners in your chosen zone. Look at voltage level, nearby generation and demand, and whether other batteries are already planned there.
Check this on the Sweden map
Substations scored for BESS, solar, wind and data centers, plus land positions and instant site checks.
Then the land
Within 1–2 km of the substation, check zoning (detaljplan), nature protection, cultural heritage, flood risk and distance to homes. A short cable route and a cooperative landowner are worth more than a slightly cheaper lease elsewhere.
Our take
Too many projects start from the land offer and work backwards to the grid. Reverse it: zone, then substation, then land.
