Germany received 147 GW of connection requests in half a year — and most of it is batteries

Germany's four TSOs got 346 connection requests totalling 147 GW in H1 2026, dominated by battery storage. Opinion: the maturity-based queue rewards prepared developers.

What happened

Germany's four transmission system operators received 346 connection requests with a combined 147 GW in the first half of 2026. At 50Hertz alone, 141 of 179 requests were battery storage projects totalling about 70 GW. The volume is so large that the economy ministry is now considering legally securing grid access for data centres and industry, and the TSOs have asked for clear policy on prioritisation. The queue changed its rules

Since April 2026, Germany no longer allocates connections first-come-first-served. A maturity assessment scores projects on land, permits and finance. In practice, a developer who already controls land near a substation and has permitting underway jumps ahead of speculative requests. 50Hertz says about 14 GW of batteries already hold positive grid reservations for 2029 or earlier, against more than 80 GW of applicants in its area alone.

Our take

This is good news for serious developers and bad news for spreadsheet projects. If you can show a secured plot, a realistic cable route and a credible permit path, you move up the queue. That makes early land work — the boring part everyone postpones — the single most valuable activity in German BESS development right now.

What to do with this

Pick substations where you can actually secure land within 1–2 km, and document it. Gridscouter's Germany map ranks substations, shows competing planned projects and finds land positions around each substation. Every Gridscouter plan starts with 14 days of full access for €0 today. Cancel any time before the trial ends and you pay nothing.

Gridscouter scores are estimates from open map data, not grid operator capacity figures. Always confirm connection capacity with the grid operator.

Formats differ per operator, and large battery queues mean published headroom is often already reserved.
