Where can you still connect a battery in Poland? A practical screening guide
With zero free transmission capacity and new connection rules from 16 October 2026, Polish BESS development is a screening problem. What to check before you lease land.
The situation
Poland's transmission grid has no free connection capacity at any substation for 2026 or 2031, and distribution grids are nearly as tight. Yet projects do get built: Greenvolt's 600 MW / 2,400 MWh battery in Siedlce is due end-2027, and PGE's 262 MW / 981 MWh unit at Żarnowiec follows in Q2 2027. The difference between projects that connect and projects that wait is preparation, not luck. Source: Zonio, 13 October 2026 (zonio.tech); Ministry of Energy.
The checks before you lease land
First, both directions: a battery needs capacity to discharge and to charge, and many areas that can take generation cannot take load. Second, the operator's register: conditions issued near your site are competition; signed agreements are certain competition. Third, the rule changes of 16 October 2026, which adjusted connection procedures — check how they affect pending applications in your area. Fourth, the land itself: zoning, distance to the substation, and whether the plot can take a 100+ MW installation with fire safety distances.

Our take
Poland is the clearest example in Europe of grid scarcity creating land value. When connection capacity is the binding constraint, the scarce asset is not the battery or the capital — it is the combination of a viable substation and a controllable plot next to it. Developers who systematically screen substations and secure land options early are the ones whose projects survive the queue.
What to do with this
Build a ranked shortlist of substations, then secure land options around the top ones before applying. Gridscouter's Poland map ranks every substation, shows planned competing projects, and finds and checks land positions around each substation. Every Gridscouter plan starts with 14 days of full access for €0 today. Cancel any time before the trial ends and you pay nothing.
Gridscouter scores are estimates from open map data, not grid operator capacity figures. Always confirm connection capacity with the grid operator.
