Poland's capacity market is bankrolling batteries: 17-year contracts and what they mean for site value
Four Polish capacity market auctions contracted an estimated 11 GW of physical battery capacity. Sites with a capacity contract are financeable — here is how the mechanics shape site selection.
What happened
Four capacity market auctions between 2022 and 2025 contracted an estimated 11 GW of physical battery capacity for delivery years 2027–2030, after de-rating. Another 172 projects secured PLN 4.15 billion (about €1 billion) in NFOŚiGW subsidies with a 2028 commissioning deadline. Modo Energy estimates operational utility-scale BESS in Poland could reach 8–9 GW by 2030, up from 37.4 MW today. Source: Modo Energy, 4 April 2026 (modoenergy.com).
The contract is the business case
A 17-year capacity contract at roughly 400+ PLN/kW/year from the main auctions is what makes Polish batteries bankable — merchant revenue alone would not carry the debt. The September 2026 supplementary (T-1) auction cleared at 325.55 PLN/kW/year, about 20% below the main auction for the same delivery year, with 94 MW of de-rated battery capacity winning. R.Power's Jedwabno and Herby projects took 76 MW of that, stacking the top-up on their existing 17-year contracts.

What this means for sites
A site that can deliver by the contract year is worth a multiple of one that cannot. That inverts normal site selection: the best plot is not the cheapest land, but the one where grid connection, permits and construction can realistically hit the delivery date. Substations with signed connection agreements nearby are proven ground; substations with only conditions issued are a gamble on someone else's timeline.
What to do with this
Screen for deliverability: grid status, land control, permit path, construction access. Gridscouter's Poland map ranks substations and the land finder checks plots around them, so you can shortlist sites that can actually make a 2028–2030 delivery. Every Gridscouter plan starts with 14 days of full access for €0 today. Cancel any time before the trial ends and you pay nothing.
Gridscouter scores are estimates from open map data, not grid operator capacity figures. Always confirm connection capacity with the grid operator.
