Hydropower in Bosnia and Herzegovina: map and what it means for new projects

Overview of large and small hydropower plants in Bosnia and Herzegovina, their role in the grid and how they affect new solar, wind and storage projects.

The backbone

Large hydro plants on the Neretva, Trebišnjica, Drina and Vrbas rivers supply a big share of Bosnia's electricity. Dozens of small hydro plants sit on mountain streams.

Flexibility

Reservoir hydro can shift output to the evening, which competes with batteries. Gridscouter reflects this by lowering BESS scores near large hydro clusters.

Grid capacity

Hydro areas often have strong 220 kV and 400 kV lines built to export power, which can make them interesting for solar that produces at different times. Gridscouter scores are estimates from open map data, not grid operator capacity figures. Confirm connection capacity with the grid operator.
