Battery storage permitting in Italy: a checklist

The main steps and checks for a battery storage project in Italy, from land to authorisation.

Before you start

Check distance to the substation, flood risk, Natura 2000 and other protected areas, landscape and heritage constraints (vincoli paesaggistici) and distance to homes.

Authorisation

Standalone storage is usually authorised through a single authorisation by the region or the ministry, depending on size. Smaller projects can use simplified procedures.

Land

Secure land rights early with a surface right (diritto di superficie) or lease. Check the catasto for parcel details and the municipal plan for zoning.

Note

This is a general overview, not legal advice. Rules change; check with the local authority and a local adviser before committing.
