Italy solar PV permitting and environmental authorization
The main administrative steps for getting a solar project approved in Italy.
Single Authorisation (AU)
Large solar projects usually require a 'Autorizzazione Unica' (AU) from the region, which combines all necessary approvals into one process.
Simplified Procedure (PAS)
Smaller projects or those in specific industrial areas may qualify for the 'Procedura Abilitativa Semplificata' (PAS), which is faster than the AU.
Environmental Impact (VIA)
Most large-scale projects must undergo a state or regional Environmental Impact Assessment (VIA) to evaluate their effect on the ecosystem.
Landscape constraints
Italy has many 'vincoli paesaggistici' (landscape constraints). Projects near historic sites or in areas of natural beauty require special clearance from the Soprintendenza.
