Italy's high-voltage grid: a developer's guide

Terna's 380, 220, 150 and 132 kV network explained for battery, solar and wind developers.

Who runs the grid

Terna operates the national transmission grid. Local distribution is run mainly by e-distribuzione (Enel) and some regional operators.

Voltage levels

The backbone is 380 kV and 220 kV. Large parts of the south use 150 kV, while the north uses 132 kV for regional lines. Gridscouter groups these into its 400, 220 and 110 kV classes.

Connections

Developers request a connection solution (STMG) from Terna or the distributor. Queues in the south are long, so checking nearby planned upgrades matters.

Note

Gridscouter scores are estimates from open map data, not grid operator capacity figures. Confirm connection capacity with the grid operator.
