Italy grid connection process and Terna queue status

Understanding the TICA regulation and how to navigate the connection queue in Italy.

TICA regulation

The connection process is governed by the TICA (Testo Integrato Connessioni Attive). It sets the rules for how Terna and regional distributors handle connection requests.

Requesting a solution

Developers submit a request to receive a Technical Solution for Connection (STMG). This document outlines the work needed to connect and the estimated costs.

Managing the queue

Italy has a very large volume of connection requests, especially in the south. Terna manages these in a queue, and projects must provide financial guarantees to remain active.

Grid saturation

In regions like Puglia and Sicily, the grid is often saturated. Developers must check if their connection depends on the completion of major planned reinforcements like the Tyrrhenian Link.

Note

Gridscouter scores are estimates from open map data, not grid operator capacity figures. Confirm connection capacity with the grid operator.
