MACSE: Italy's battery storage auctions explained

What Terna's MACSE storage auctions mean for battery developers and where storage is needed.

What MACSE is

MACSE is Terna's system for buying long-term storage capacity through auctions. Winners get a long contract that pays for capacity, which lowers the risk of building large batteries.

Where storage is needed

The first auctions focus on the south and the islands, where solar and wind already exceed local demand at midday.

What it means for site scouting

Land near strong substations in Puglia, Sicily and Sardinia is in high demand. Gridscouter's BESS scores show which substations combine high voltage with lots of nearby renewables.

Note

Auction details change over time; check Terna's official MACSE pages. Gridscouter scores are estimates from open map data, not grid operator capacity figures. Confirm connection capacity with the grid operator.
