Italy's planned grid and energy projects to 2031

Terna's HVDC links, MACSE battery storage and large solar and wind projects shaping Italy's grid to 2031.

Overview

Italy is rebuilding its grid around the south and the islands, where most new solar and wind is built. Terna's Hypergrid programme adds new HVDC links so power can flow north to the demand centres.

Key grid projects

The Tyrrhenian Link connects Sicily and Sardinia with Campania. The Adriatic Link runs along the east coast between Abruzzo and Marche. ELMED connects Sicily with Tunisia, and SA.CO.I.3 renews the link between Sardinia, Corsica and Tuscany.

Battery storage

Terna's MACSE auctions contract large amounts of long-duration battery storage, mostly in the south, Sicily and Sardinia. This is one of the biggest storage programmes in Europe.

How to use the timeline

Drag the year slider on the Italy map to see each project appear and how battery site scores change as new lines arrive.

Note

Years and locations are best estimates from public announcements. Gridscouter scores are estimates from open map data, not grid operator capacity figures. Confirm connection capacity with the grid operator.
