Best places for battery storage (BESS) in France

How Gridscouter ranks over 1,000 RTE substations in France for battery storage, and what makes a strong BESS site at 225 and 400 kV.

Why batteries in France

France has a large nuclear base plus fast-growing solar and wind. Batteries earn money from balancing services and from shifting midday solar into evening demand. Only a few dozen batteries show up in open map data so far, so the market is still early.

How we rank substations

Each 225 kV and 400 kV substation is scored on voltage, nearby solar and wind, distance to existing batteries and grid density. The score comes with a suggested MW/MWh size and the reasons behind it.

Where to look

Areas with lots of solar in the south and wind in the north tend to score well, as do substations near the planned offshore landing points.

Note

Gridscouter scores are estimates from open map data, not grid operator capacity figures. Confirm connection capacity with the grid operator.
